GAIA and Hello World - Centre for Life, Newcastle

A seven metre sculpture floats within the entrance foyer of The Centre for Life in Newcastle.

To introduce the piece, simple interpretation was required for the visitor to understand exactly what the art piece is about but in a challenging environment & making the most of the visitors views from floor and mezzanine level.

The mezzanine level in the Centre for Life in Newcastle is a strange shape and has often been used for small temporary displays or Under 7s play.

The centre wanted to relate an under 7s activity area to the Gaia sculpture and create a space that was more than just a zone for kids to play in but a place for action and creativity for families whilst learning about the world.

We created wall mounted ‘colour in’ maps with animals in their countries. Bespoke tables for drawing and writing as well as including a set of easels for artists of all ages to draw their own views of Gaia then display on the art gallery wall. A reading area with books relating to the world and all it holds fills the central area of the space.
