A purpose built bespoke display case was designed to make a statement in the large foyer and creativity area. A number of models manufactured in Lego and M constructed at the request of the science centre to showcase inventions and creations by man that have changed the world we live in - from Stephensons rocket engine to the first machine invented for telecommunications. A scaled replica of the tallest building in the world today alongside the Angel of the North-looking tiny in comparison!

The Marianne North Gallery at Kew contains a collection of more than 800 paintings that cover the walls. This is a permanent display and the signage outside needed a fresh update that also gave the visitors a taster of whats inside! The approach was simple, utilising the design that we had created for The Temperate House with minor adjustments so that sits sweetly next to the gallery steps.

14,000 trees live in the landscape at Kew (a UNESCO World Heritage site) Each group of trees has been planted carefully and considerately in ‘family groups’. The new obelisks were commissioned to interpret the story of each family group, the capacity to present new or updated information and provide a source of way-finding for the visitor.

The design relied upon sustainability and sitting comfortably in the landscape. The design uses sustainably resourced English Oak living up to the challenge of withstanding the micro-climatical weather within the grounds and its potential to age naturally and remain looking beautiful.

With an extension of the gardens totems and obelisks language in mind the Conservation area required interpretation in various forms to fit both landscape and boardwalk construction. Sustainable English oak was again used to create benches that would not detract from the surroundings but have an honest and obvious use. An area for learning, some of these have been used to display easy to read interpretation and all are engraved with icons from the forest floor.

Others have been allocated a desk top feel with weatherproofed educational binders identifying trees, plants and animals that live within the landscape. Every so often along the boardwalk journey a tree or group of plants will be identified on a simple oak post with images and information once more expressing the same language used for way finding in the gardens.

Agius Evolution Garden - Kew Gardens The Agius garden was completed in the middle of 2019 filled with around 700 varieties of plants. Eight sections in the garden illustrate a deeper understanding of plant evolution in a format accessible for audiences of all kinds. As with Temperate House Kew the interpretation does not block views or interfere with the visitors experience but blends itself harmoniously into the landscape of the garden.

Under 7s Pop-Up Play - Centre for Life, Newcastle To engage younger visitors in science play rather than science education at the Centre for Life the client was looking for a suite of three pop up play areas.

Although all three are different, divided and often hidden around parts of the centre they still needed to be easily recognised as such, it was imperative that a good graphic identity along with three-dimensional continuation of shape form and colour scheme became key alongside storage, seating and accessible units for each pop-ups, kit of parts.

A seven metre sculpture floats within the entrance foyer of The Centre for Life in Newcastle. To introduce the piece, simple interpretation was required for the visitor to understand exactly what the art piece is about but in a challenging environment & making the most of the visitors views from floor and mezzanine level.

It is important in an area as vast as Kew Gardens to have very obvious beacons of direction and information and yet ensure that the integrity of the garden and its nature are not compromised. The design and structure was lead by sustainability, clear and concise weatherproof messaging and the overall desire for the beacons to nestle naturally within the landscape for the benefit of both the gardens and its visitors. Ethically resourced English Oak endures the elements and ages beautifully.

Each totem has been put together honestly with visible fixings and a loyalty to its fabric. Built with handmade craftsmanship they are set to stand the test of time.

Designed by UK based artist Wolfgang Buttress, The Hive is a visual tribute to Britain’s honeybees, created for the UK Pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo, it has been reinstalled in Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. A thousand LED lights pulse according to the vibrations of bees that live in the Gardens accompanied a musical symphony that works in harmony to the bees daily routines.

In partnership with Kew’s Creative Department we developed a series of oak interventions that carried interpretation and opportunities to sit and enjoy the installation in the wonderful surrounding wildflower meadows.

An exhibition of large colour photographs exploring the community living in Highbury Stadium Square, a residential complex located in the former Arsenal Stadium. Occupying the bridge gallery at the science museum for just 8 weeks this display required a different approach to the usual science based projects. A clean ordered environment was needed to display large scale ‘alchemical’ designs, photo-texts and a set of hand coloured tarot cards. A complex & interesting show to present that mixed science with politics and art in what is usually an industrial setting.

A very complex exhibition subject going behind the doors of contemporary urban homes in Japan to find out how domestic lives are lived today, questioning the stereotype of the minimal house seen to be devoid of people and things. Visitors needed to experience decoration, display and furniture as well as such things as eating, sleeping, cleaning, hygiene and worship. We created the layout of an urban apartment filled with a selection of everyday possessions and use

Part of the INGENIOUS gallery programme the exhibition shows personal stories & memorabilia of the pilots and their families with a Spitfire as its centrepiece. The text rich exhibit required careful handling and an appropriate and sympathetic colour scheme as the size and scale of the deconstructed plane could have overwhelmed the other objects.

Marking the 200th anniversary of Brunels birth, the exhibition includes a number of rare photographs of construction & engineering. The power of the objects under construction coupled with the artistic use of depth and tone in the photography makes this more of an ‘Art’ exhibit rather than an engineering one. Showing construction in detail as it happens the frames can be read consecutively in their display and models add a more 3-Dimensional view for the visitor.

Focussing on the Geffryes gardens and buildings and working as design leaders with the initial ideas from the young peoples project this venture explores and re-interpreted the history of the Geffyre Museum. Large rotated photo cubes are placed along the central pathway at regular intervals. Occasional mirrored faces provide the visitor with an image of themselves in the buildings grounds.

A journey through the science of mental health. A number of objects in this exhibition were being displayed for the first time due to their sensitive nature. One particularly challenging piece to display was a life size human nervous system that had been removed from a corpse by medical students and varnished onto a wooden table-top. 400 years of a fascination with the fabled Northwest Passage are recounted in this small exhibition at the British Library. Displaying quirky objects such as a book of designs for the first inflatable boat that turns into a cloak and the first known illustrations of Santa Claus. Much of this content has gone on display for the first time and though contained in a small display area within the Library’s cavernous home it manages to stand up and speak for itself.

Working alongside artist and filmmaker David McKeen this temporary exhibition offered the first chance to visitors to see the library’s comic collection with original artwork, props and costume. A controversial subject, the show contained an amount of challenging subject matter, fantasy, social status, explicit sexual themes & child loss pushing the boundaries of ‘Museum’ design. Using sinister masked groups of mannequins’ changes in colour, fabric and atmosphere

Following an in-depth evaluation of signage, labelling and visitor information at Kew Botanical Gardens, one of our first tasks was to tackle a small garden area behind Kew Palace (the smallest of the British Royal palaces) The ‘Queens Garden’ sits behind the palace and includes a collection of plants believed to have medicinal qualities and only plants grown in 17th Century England are planted in the garden, We designed 3 types of information holder for the garden

A special exhibition linked to Terry Deary and his ‘Horrible Histories’ books. This was a complete antithesis to the usual ‘Museum’ story, helping children to learn what life on the battlefield was like in WW1. Replica objects to pick up and try on, things to smell and rats to follow were coupled with original objects displayed in cases. The idea to keep the visitor interested as well as educated lent itself to using bright colours (on an otherwise dark subject) and accessible signage and text
