A kit of parts that can be easily re-configured and re-purposed for changing topics relevant to new science stories’
The system was created before the final decision on the inaugural exhibition. Using a hexagonal module means any of them can be pushed together to create different shapes and layouts. Childrens design is often very much associated with primary colours so the leftfield approach of white and pastel shades replace the expected red, yellow & blue and a funky graphic identity continues the theme allowing the younger children (as well as their parents) to easly recognise the spaces made just for them. To engage younger visitors in science play rather than science education at the Centre for Life the client was looking for a suite of three pop up play areas.

The existing makers studio within the centre stood large and slightly awkward within its weird and wonderful piece of architecture, looking more house than factory and providing a more school classroom vibe than a making one.

A seven metre sculpture floats within the entrance foyer of The Centre for Life in Newcastle. To introduce the piece, simple interpretation was required for the visitor to understand exactly what the art piece is about but in a challenging environment & making the most of the visitors views from floor and mezzanine level.
The mezzanine level in the Centre for Life in Newcastle is a strange shape and has often been used for small temporary displays or Under 7s play. The centre wanted to relate an under 7s activity area to the Gaia sculpture and create a space that was more than just a zone for kids to play in but a place for action and creativity for families whilst learning about the world.

A purpose built bespoke display case was designed to make a statement in the large foyer and creativity area. A number of models manufactured in Lego and M constructed at the request of the science centre to showcase inventions and creations by man that have changed the world we live in - from Stephensons rocket engine to the first machine invented for telecommunications. A scaled replica of the tallest building in the world today alongside the Angel of the North-looking tiny in comparison!
A large amount of space on the mezzanine level in Life is currently used as an area for parents to take their under 7s to role play - like kitchen spaces, a supermarket & garden. Needing a refresh and to provide the area with a solid status we added large graphic mats that focussed each activity along with playfully titled signifiers.
Extra activities were included to develop the variety available in the zone and creating liveliness and movement from one mat to another. Large curved and coloured benches complete the space and mean that parents have a place to rest with full view of their little ones but are also part of the action.

Richmond Castle commands its position in North Yorkshire overlooking the River Swale. A large open space in the central grounds of the castle needed bringing to life. We created medieval flags and activity stations to colour the landscape and tell the tales of all the working ruins within. Quizzes, mazes and challenges along the way, using your tally stick (free with your ticket).

Established in 1246 this former abbey in the Cotswolds was the resting place of The Holy Blood of Hailes Little remains of the building itself and the dated museum demanded a gentle and sympathetic refurbishment. Our design reflects the symmetry of the abbeys layout using the richness of colour to bring the elegance of the museum objects to life in a clean and contemporary manner and with delicate sensitivity for their protection and conservation.
